There's been a lot of speculation about why Giuliani interrupted his own speech at the National Rifle Association to take a phone call.  Speculation on Giuliani's motives have ranged from outright egomania to an attempt to portray himself as a family man.  A review of the video and the Bill of Rights could dispel these theories, and show how massive of a controversy he actually avoided by taking the phone call.

"Just think of the language of it," (That is, the 2nd Amendment) he goes on to say "The people shall be secure" and is immediately interrupted.  (That actually isn't how the second amenement goes at all... "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.")

Maybe he was thinking of the fourth amendment:   "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures"  Its not like he had the text of that one correct either, but he was definitely a lot closer.

After the phone call he says, "Its a lot better that way" and moves his speech to talking about the nature of cell phones and modern conversation.   

If Rudy had not been interrupted by his "wife," he would have likely continued to butcher the constitution and display his disdain for the rights of Americans.  Although he's been quite against the NRA and generally hostile to gun rights, he understands now that he needs to win the primary by attracting overwhelming Republican support.  

You think there's a lot of coverage now?  Imagine if he had gotten a few more words in before he picked up the phone.
