| Happy Birthday America - 2008 |

Its time to drink some real Tennessee whisky and blow stuff up. Nothing quite says "AMERICA!!!" quite like setting off bright explosions in the middle of the night and grilling up red meat. We'll probably sit around the bonfires boasting of nationalist pride and our many industrial or military accomplishments. Even if the future is dim, our past is still glowing. However, any talk of liberty or independence or revolution might be hushed or better yet unsaid. These concepts seem to have fallen out of the public favor, and we seem to be entering a new era of American political life. At no time in our history aside from the worst of WW2 or the Civil War has so much of our daily life been dictated from Washington. At no time have our financial markets, industries, and small businesses labored under such strict scrutiny and weighty regulation. In the name of more stable markets contract after contract is awarded; committees, investigations, and bureaucratic administrations are established. And in the midst of it all, there is a popular call for more. And our leaders, eager to please, will promise whatever it takes - whatever the cost. We should have more of this and more of that, and the government should be sure to provide it - or protect us from it - or educate us and our children for we cannot bear to learn on our own. This fourth of July, as you turn to Congress and demand that they "do something," remember to celebrate your unprecedented dependence. Smile for the security cameras and bring your up-to-date identification papers. Just be sure to leave the Declaration of Independence at home, you wouldn't want to be forced to explain it at a law-enforcement road block.
