Are you upset about speculators and their effect on prices? Have you considered if you yourself are one of these "evil" speculators wreaking havoc on the financial markets?
Let's take a look at what the word actually means in the dictionary.
The word comes from the Latin root: speculari, meaning to look at, examine, and attempt to understand. People watching sporting events are 'spectators' and people who apply this examination toward business and financial decisions are called 'speculators.'
1a: to meditate on or ponder a subject : reflect 1b: to review something idly or casually and often inconclusively
2: to assume a business risk in hope of gain; especially : to buy or sell in expectation of profiting from market fluctuationstransitive verb
If the problem in our financial markets and commodities is that too many people are "meditating and pondering on the subject," the solution implied by an attack on speculation is for people to become more compliant and less intent on understanding what's going on.
