Boycott threats and Bad PR causes News Corp Stock to dip below industry competitors. Wall Street is down across the board, but News Corp is sinking further than the index has, and its showing weakness against competitors as well. News Corp Stock Jan-2 2008, First Trading Day after Ron Paul inspired boycott/stock sell-off
News Corp, the parent company of Fox News cable channels and FoxNews.com opened to a steep loss today as financial papers broke the news of a growing customer boycott. In the last few years, News Corp's relentless use of media as a propoganda arm has alienated liberals, moderates, and independents alike. The company's stock peaked, by no coincidence, in the months following the "Shock and Awe" campaign. While the war was still popular, viewers could count on FoxNews to do the cheerleading. Today, you can count on them to beat the drums of war. They just found a new target in Iran: As the truth about the war came out - false reasons for war, torture, civilian casualties, and the destruction of civil infrastructure - public opinion has swung wildly from patriotic nationalism to anger and downright indignation.
Despite the overwhelming contempt for Bush and the war in Iraq, Fox chooses to put propoganda above business interests: and the online viewership is dropping dramatically...even with Conservative Republicans! Fred Thompson isn't winning any friends at FoxNews by focusing on policy and economic issues, but he's willing to challenge their talking heads on the way they keep trying to under-cut him. Fox's latest decision to value ideological purity over public opinion is their move to exclude Ron Paul from the last televised presidential forum prior to the New Hampshire primary. Supporters are organizing boycott campaigns against the television stations, websites, and advertisers who are supporting News Corp. Why is this different than all of the other boycotts and outrages against FoxNews? Well, up until now, Fox had at least done well with Republicans. This primary election cycle, they have begun to alienate this remaining base by pushing Giuliani at the expense of real conservatives like Fred Thompson and Ron Paul.
