I got a funny picture in an email from a friend just now. Is it grossly oversimplified? Sure, but it gets to the root of why people have a problem with a system that steals on principle of compassion.
Now, put some power-hungry politicians in charge of the process, and I guarantee you'll have a mess! Oh yeah, we already have a big mess. Unfortunately, it seems like the problem today is moreso with the corporate welfare for General Electric and other politically connected corporations. Individual welfare is barely a blip on the federal budget, but its still destructive to the people living in the "red-zoned" areas of HUD. I love to conceive of new ways to defeat poverty and increase human living standards, but I'm not sure if forceful transfers of wealth from one individual to another is the answer. This is quite different than providing public services that all can benefit from.
