How Congress can Protect America E-mail
Thursday, 26 June 2008

The following entry is a letter I've written to my state's senator.  I don't even expect a form reply anymore.

If you want to speak up on HR 6304 (FISA) or if you want to complain about the recent Congressional attempts to nationalize the oil industry or cut America off from global commodities markets, please feel free to use any or all of this letter in your correspondence with your own state's Senators.

Senator Martinez:

Today, America is facing a grave threat.  What is at stake is more vital than our very lives, it is the essence of what makes America great.  The aggressors are not a foreign power nor a rebel terrorist cell.  The assault is not on individuals lives but rather their rights.  Citizens are losing property rights and privacy, and in turn, we are becoming the property of the state - the only entity to retain any rights.

As a lifelong Republican, I am at a loss.  I do not know how I can continue to support either political party.  I do not know how I can recognize the legitimacy of a government that does not defend the constitution they have sworn to protect.  By what agreement or charter are you authorized to speak and enact law on my behalf, if not this constitution?

H.R. 6304 - the FISA amendment - is coming for a vote in Senate.  I would dare say that most Americans do not fear illiterate jihadis plotting in a cave so much as we fear domestic do-gooders in Ivory halls who believe they are above the constitution and American's God-given rights.  The fourth amendment is not merely a suggestion - it is an essential risk born out of the American hunger for liberty, privacy, and security from intrusive political power.  I urge you to vote with a resounding NO!  Not in favor of compromises, or half-hearted measures at oversight:  NO!  There is simply no legal authority vested in Congress that can make this a legitimate piece of legislation while preserving its intent.

Meanwhile, as my own Republicans sell me out in the name of fear, the Democrats are clamoring for an end to private industry and private ownership by misdirecting voter anger over gas prices.  If anything, please fight this usurpation or America is surely lost.  Not only shall we serfs be property of the state, we shall be the property of a bankrupt state.

There is just one way for Washington to lower gas prices:  Stop interfering.  The first and most important way to accomplish this is by protecting the dollar.  You must cut taxes for America to remain globally competitive, but you must cut federal spending first.  All legitimate functions of the federal government can be accomplished with minimal funds - the taxes freed up can be used locally, as here in Florida where we so desperately need it.  Our municipalities are starved for cash and dreaming up new fees, our state is slashing future investment in education and forcing our teachers to become like beggars to the federal grant system.  Meanwhile, the individual that drives the economy has been thrown off the ledge of an inflationary spiral fueled by zealous political spending and interference in the banking system.

We have not elected our state Senators so that they could bring more of our power, sovereignty, and freedom under the control of a distant throne in Washington D.C.  We have elected you to protect our constitution, protect our dollar, and protect America.
